no hang-ups

about

“no hang-ups” is not about being perfect or seeking people who are perfect, but rather about bringing our best selves, not our baggage to relationships. The song acknowledges that we’ve all had negative experiences, trauma, and situations that fell terribly short of our expectations; In spite of that, it insists that we attempt to grow and heal and help our partner do the same. "no hang-ups" is about getting to a place of equity, compassion, and trust in a relationship.

The song's hook "I need a lover with no hang-ups" as well as the verse melody and first few lines came to me while I was driving to work circa 2016. I have a vivid memory of being at a stoplight on Orange Ave at Willow Street and the refrain hitting me.

Musically, the song was initially inspired by "Dirty Mind"-era Prince, a sort of Funk and New Wave synthesis, but like all of our material went through the bb process and came out new.

lyrics

though we're still young
we're both grown now
been through almost
all of our changes
the past is the past
let's keep in the moment
with no worries
no expectations

that's not what i need
i know what i need

i need somebody
who'll do without projection
somebody
with a fresh perspective
of course you know that
i've known heartache too
but i know better
than to put that on you

that's now what you need
it's not what you need
that's not what you need
i know what you need

you need a lover with no hang-ups
you need a lover with no hang-ups

i really wanna be that for you
lay your armor down for a moment won't you
you and i both recognize the hour (you know what time it is)
it's about pleasure, not about power

and i know what i need
i know what i need
i know what i need
i know what i need

i need a lover with no hangups
you need a lover with no hangups
i need a lover
I really want to be that for you
you need a lover
you really want to be that for me
